DEET is a chemical that was developed by the United States Army as an insect repellent in the 1940s. Reports show rashes, irritation of the skin, mucus membranes, numbness, burning sensation and neurological side-effects of DEET exposure. In the past, higher levels of DEET were allowed, but due to the harsh chemical, the limit today is 20% in Europe. We have turned to a total different solution choosing p-menthane-3,8-diol as active ingredient and it is the only plant-based repellent approved in Europe that both children (from 6 months) and pregnant women can use. Test studies shows equal effect on mosquitos compared to DEET.
